Kitchen appliances can have many problems through their lifetime. Your fridge all of a sudden stops keeping your food cold, or you oven isn’t heating up. These issues arise sometimes suddenly, and it’s good to know how to fix them. If the issue is past your skill level to fix, don’t be afraid to ask a professional for help.

Fridges and Freezers

If your freezer or fridge isn’t keeping your food cold or frozen, the first step is to check if the doors are closing all the way shut and the seal is completely suctioned to the appliance. Also check for any unusual things going on such as dripping, weird noises, and heat. An working refrigerator gives off heat, but if it seems abnormally hot there is probably and issue.

Odor

Another common issue with refrigerators can be bad smells. It can be caused by spoiled food, but also from neglect or temperature control. Before deciding the smell is too much and you want to purchase a whole new fridge or freezer, clean the shelves and bins with soap and let it dry. Then you should clean the evaporator. Make the temperature between 0 to 40 degrees to prevent mold growth and the build up of frost.

Ovens and Microwaves

Does food burn quickly in your oven, or take too long to cook? Your oven may need a recalibration rather than a replacement. Buy an oven thermometer to check the temperature settings. This can save you a lot of money.

Broken Microwave

Is your microwave not heating up your food? The issue could be the magnetron or some other faulty issue. Magnetrons can break when a microwave is started with nothing in it. In this case, you might need to replace that part or buy a new microwave.

Is your microwave plate not rotating? This can make your food come out undercooked, or incorrectly cooked. Try to clean the turntable and make sure there aren’t big crumbs or anything causing it to stick. If not, the motor just might be on it’s way out.

Broken Disposal

If your garbage disposal isn’t grinding up food properly, reset it before trying anything else. If that doesn’t work, try putting in an ice cube and turn on the disposal. If you think there’s a piece of silverware or food that isn’t garbage disposal friendly stuck in there, unplug and try removing whatever it is.
